How to Create a Witchy Junk Drawer for Everyday Magic.

Witchy drawer collage with crystals, feathers, candles, and trinkets. Text: "The Witchy House Junk Drawer" on a mystical blue background.

This morning, I was unpacking some new incense I’d just received as stock for The Awen Room. Arlene—my son’s beautiful girlfriend—is originally from Guernsey, one of the Channel Islands nestled between England and France. We met her about a year ago, and she’s just recently moved back to Australia and is now living with us.

It’s such a joy having her in our home. One of my favourite things is watching how she gently marvels at all the witchy business that naturally weaves its way through our daily life here. She notices the little things—like the way I prepare a space, light a candle, or talk about herbs and energy as though it’s the most normal thing in the world (because in this house, it kind of is).

We were chatting over the incense, and I asked her if she ever burns it herself. She told me her favourite fragrance, and I paused and smiled. “Hang on,” I said. “I think I might actually have that one.”

I opened the sideboard in our dining room and rummaged through a drawer I often dip into when I need to find something magical. Sure enough, there it was—the exact incense she had described.

Her eyes lit up. “Yes, that’s it!” she beamed. Then she laughed and said, “This is like a hippie house junk drawer!”

And I thought, yes. Yes it is.

You know the kind. Most of us have one in the kitchen—the infamous bottom drawer full of odds and ends: some matches, a bit of sticky tape, rubber bands, a random peg or two, old manuals from appliances long gone, and probably a torch for power outages. It’s the drawer we rummage through in a blackout, hoping to find something that still works.

But I hadn’t realised I had this other version. A sacred sibling to the kitchen junk drawer. One that’s just a little more magical.

My sideboard drawer is filled with all the bits and pieces I turn to when I need to ground a space, perform a spontaneous ritual, or gift someone a little pinch of magic. There are incense sticks and cones, Palo Santo, sage bundles, matches and lighters, charcoal discs for burning herbs or resins. There’s string and feathers, crystals, a broken piece of china I just can’t let go of, a few tealight candles, a birthday cake ornament from my childhood, and tiny symbolic objects collected over the years. It’s a drawer full of intention, of memory, and of readiness—for when the moment calls.

It struck me then how important that drawer really is.

It’s like the spiritual version of the household emergency kit. When I feel energetically flat, need to shift the energy in a room, or simply want to mark a moment with meaning, I turn to that drawer. Sometimes, just opening it is enough to remember who I am.

So I’m officially giving it a new name:

The Witchy House Junk Drawer.

And honestly? I think everyone should have one.

It doesn’t have to be big or fancy. It just needs to hold the things that help you feel grounded, inspired, connected. The things that call you back to yourself.

If you’d like to make your own, here’s a little list to get you started…

What to Keep in Your Witchy House Junk Drawer:

  • Matches and lighters

  • Incense (sticks, cones, or loose leaf)

  • Charcoal discs

  • Sage, Palo Santo, or herbal bundles

  • Tealight candles

  • A small candle holder or dish

  • A crystal or two (clear quartz is a great all-rounder)

So next time you feel the pull to pause, breathe, or shift the energy in your space—don’t overthink it. Just open the drawer.

Because sometimes magic doesn’t come from planning the perfect ritual.

Sometimes it lives in the drawer you forgot was even sacred.

Do you have a drawer like this at home?

One filled with witchy bits and pieces—whether it was intentional or not?

Maybe it’s time to give it a name… or turn it into a little sacred stash of your own.

I’d love to know what’s tucked away in yours—comment below and share your everyday magical treasures. I’m always gathering inspiration (and let’s be honest, I’ll probably find space for one more crystal or candle stub).

Blessed be,

Angela 💫

My witchy junk drawer is also like a mini time capsule. I’ve always been a collector of tiny things, figures, pencil stubs, candle ends, seeds, flowers or sticks. I have tiny memories of people I love, notes from so many loved children & friends children, Lego, marbles, wooden spools or thimbles. All tiny memories of moments we shared weaving their memory and moments into my life.

When we moved house after living in it with our babies for 12 years, I cleaned underneath my fridge - all the gorgeous treasures sent under the fridge from toddlers ended up in this drawer. I couldn’t throw a single tiny toy out - the raisins and crumbs on the other hand 😳🥴🤭

Oh Michelle, I totally get that under-the-fridge business—oh my goodness! Thankfully, we’ve moved house a few times over the years, so I know for certain there are no more toddler treasures hiding beneath our fridge… but I can absolutely relate. Those tiny time capsules are precious.

Reading your comment made me smile, especially because looking through the photos of my own drawer, I realised I have a little bundle of hair from all four of us—snipped from different times in our lives. I travel with it, I use it in spells, or just hold it when someone’s away. It’s such a comfort, isn’t it? The things we hold onto without even realising how sacred they’ve become.

I’ve got another box…
