Autumn Equinox in Australia • Meaning, Rituals and Seasonal Living
There’s a moment each year where something quietly shifts.
You wake up one morning and the air feels different. The light has softened. The edges of the day feel gentler somehow.
And even if you haven’t looked at a calendar… your body already knows.
For me, that moment has been arriving in small, almost unnoticeable ways. Cooler mornings in the mountains, a softness in the light, a sense that the outward energy of summer is slowly beginning to turn inward.
In my last podcast episode, I spoke briefly about the Autumn Equinox arriving, and a few people reached out asking for a deeper dive. What it means, what’s actually happening beneath the surface, and how we can honour it in our own homes, in our own way.
So this is that deeper dive.
The Autumn Equinox arrives on March 21st here in the Southern Hemisphere. It’s the moment when day and night are equal, when light and dark share the sky in balance.
From here, we slowly begin moving into the darker half of the year.
But what I’ve always found most interesting is that we often start feeling this shift before we consciously notice it.
🌙 When the Body and Subconscious Begin to Shift
This week my daughter Helena and I both had dreams on the same night.
She dreamt that I made her warm chocolate pudding. In the dream she was about to eat it for breakfast… and then she woke up, and it wasn’t there.
At the exact same time, I had dreamt that I was making bread and butter pudding. Something I haven’t made in years.
We’ve always had this connection with dreaming. Ever since she was little, she wakes up and tells me what she’s dreamt about.
So when we realised we’d both dreamt about warm puddings on the same night, it felt like more than coincidence.
That evening, we went to her place for dinner, and yes… we made pudding. And it was delicious. And now that I’m writing this, I honestly want it again.
But it made me pause.
Because when the season begins to shift, are we already responding?
In summer, we crave fruit, cold drinks, fresh light food. But as autumn approaches, we start craving warmth. Spice. Comfort.
So what is that?
Memory?
Instinct?
Something happening in the body?
Probably all of it.
🍁 Nature as a Mirror for the Body, Mind and Spirit
One of the most powerful and quietly magical things we can do is look at nature as a mirror.
Autumn is such a clear reflection of what we experience within ourselves.
The leaves dry out, they change colour, and they fall. And our bodies often follow in their own way. Skin becomes a little drier, a little more textured. We feel the need to exfoliate, to moisturise, to soften.
It’s like we are shedding too.
And emotionally, we may feel ready to let go of things that no longer serve us. Old patterns, old thoughts, old emotional weight.
Just like the trees, we release what we no longer need.
And what’s beautiful is that nothing is wasted. Those fallen leaves nourish the soil. Everything transforms.
Mentally, autumn often brings reflection. A natural pause. A moment to look back at the year so far and ask what is working, what isn’t, and what we want to carry forward.
Energetically, things begin to soften. Summer’s outward energy begins to turn inward. Not in a heavy way… just in a quieter, more grounded way.
🧠 A Touch of Science, A Lot of Awareness
I’m not a scientist, but in my counselling and meditation studies we did explore parts of the brain and psychology.
The limbic system, which processes emotion and memory, responds strongly to changes in our environment. Light, temperature and scent all influence how we feel and what we remember.
The pineal gland responds to light, influencing melatonin, which is why many of us start feeling ready to rest earlier as the days begin to shorten.
So there is something biological happening here.
But long before science explained it, people were already living in rhythm with the seasons.
They were simply paying attention.
🌿 Bringing Autumn Into the Home
One of the ways I personally honour the seasons is by bringing them inside.
I am absolutely known for dragging branches into my house. Quite large ones.
Adam has accepted this as part of life now.
But for me, it’s intentional.
It turns my home into a living altar.
It’s not just about making things look beautiful. It’s about surrounding myself with a reminder of where I am in the cycle of the year.
For the next few months, I am living in autumn.
And that means something.
It gives me permission to tend to myself differently. To slow down slightly, to reflect, to soften, to release… but also to choose what I gather.
Because when I bring those branches inside, I think about both sides of the season.
There is the shedding… the letting go… the leaves falling.
And then there is the harvest.
What I am choosing to keep. What I am bringing forward. What I am gathering and holding onto as I move into the next phase.
So the altar becomes a reflection of both.
What I am releasing… and what I am consciously choosing to carry with me.
If you don’t want to drag a tree through your front door like I do, you might simply create a small autumn altar. A few leaves, a candle, something seasonal.
Just something that gently reminds you… this is where I am right now.
✨ Light, Dark, and Balance
The equinox is a moment of balance. Light and dark are equal.
And that exists within us too.
Light can be our outward energy. Our doing, creating, connecting.
Dark can be rest, reflection, stillness.
Dark doesn’t mean bad. It often just means quiet.
So this is a beautiful time to ask yourself…
Where do I need more balance?
Where have I been pushing too hard?
Where might I need to soften, to rest, or to turn inward?
Autumn invites that conversation in a very gentle way.
🪶 Journaling for the Autumn Equinox
If you feel like going a little deeper, here are a few gentle prompts you might like to sit with:
What am I ready to let go of as I move into this season?
What feels nourishing and worth carrying forward?
Where in my life do I need more balance between doing and resting?
What am I quietly growing beneath the surface right now?
How can I care for my body, mind and energy in a softer, more supportive way this season?

Autumn Alchemy in a Cup
As a little seasonal ritual, here is something you might like to try.
I call it the Autumn Hearth Milk Spell.
Warm a cup of milk gently.
Add cinnamon for warmth and protection.
Add ginger for gentle fire and movement.
Add vanilla for comfort and emotional softness.
Add a little honey if you like, for grounding.
Stir clockwise, drawing in what you want this season to hold.
Warmth.
Rest.
Clarity.
Nourishment.
Let it infuse. Sip slowly.
That’s it.
If you loved this, I’d be so grateful if you left a five-star rating on the podcast… it really helps more people find this space.
And I would genuinely love to hear from you… come and say hello over at The Awen Room.
Blessed be,
Angela 🌙
