Maiden, Mother and Crone
Three women, three lifetimes, one shared wisdom—maiden, mother, and crone embrace the sunset, honoring the beauty of every phase.

We are born, we grow, we give, we evolve. The Threefold Goddess—Maiden, Mother, and Crone—is a sacred representation of this journey, mirroring the phases of the moon, the cycles of the Earth, and the seasons of our lives. She is a reflection of who we are, who we have been, and who we are yet to become.

Yet, in today’s world, we are taught to resist these changes—especially the passage into motherhood and, most of all, the transition into our crone years. We idolize youth and fear ageing, forgetting that every wrinkle, every grey hair, every shifting curve is not something to erase—it is something to honour.

But Maiden, Mother, and Crone exist in all of us—not just as life stages, but as energies that cycle through our lives constantly.

   •   Every new idea, project, relationship, or phase of life begins in the Maiden stage—where we dream, envision, and step into something fresh.

   •   The Mother phase is the time of tending, nurturing, and committing to the work—whether that’s raising a child, building a career, training for a marathon, or creating something meaningful.

   •   The Crone phase is where wisdom settles in, where we reflect, refine, and integrate—whether it’s completing a project, closing a chapter, or stepping back to guide others.

We are always shifting between these energies. You have been all three today, this month, this year—whether or not you have given birth, whether or not you feel ‘old enough’ to claim wisdom.

This is why we honour each phase—not just in the years of our lives, but in everything we do.

🌑 The Maiden: Beginnings, Curiosity & The Power of Growth

The Maiden is the dawn of life. She is wide-eyed, free-spirited, full of dreams and possibilities. She is new life, new beginnings, the energy of the waxing moon and the breath of springtime. She embodies the element of Air, where thoughts swirl, ideas bloom, and possibilities feel endless.

Yet, this phase is often one of uncertainty.

The Maiden is still learning who she is.

She may feel restless, unsure, pressured to figure it all out.

She is growing into her body, her emotions, her power.

“Can the Maiden look at herself in the mirror and be comfortable with the unknown? Can she honour the beauty of her changing form, even when it feels unfamiliar? Can she celebrate her menstrual cycle as a sacred rhythm, rather than something to dread?”

The blood of the Maiden is the blood of initiation, the body’s first sign that it is in tune with the cycles of the moon. Yet, in our society, menstruation is seen as inconvenient or something to hide. In truth, it is one of the most natural, powerful, and sacred gifts a woman has—a direct connection to the lunar cycle, to creation, to life itself.

The Maiden Within Us All

Even as we grow older, we return to the Maiden phase each time we start something new.

She lives in the spark of inspiration, the first steps of a journey, the excitement of an unexplored path.

Sacred Reflection:

→ What new paths am I stepping into?

How can I embrace the unknown?

What parts of my youth still whisper to me?

🌕 The Mother: Creation, Nurturing & The Power of Giving

The Mother is not just a woman who gives birth—she is anyone who creates, nurtures, and gives of themselves. She is the Full Moon, the height of power, the abundance of summer. She embodies the element of Fire, the warmth of passion, creation, and protection.

She is tireless. She gives and gives and gives.

She is pouring into children, partners, careers, friendships, dreams.

She is often last on her own list.

“Can the Mother see the tenderness in her eyes when she looks at her child? Can she honour the strength in her arms, the softness in her curves, the proof of a life well-lived written on her skin? Can she embrace her scars as sacred markings of love, not imperfections?”

The Mother phase is not just about raising children—it is about tending to something with devotion.

   •   Some women are mothers of children.

   •   Some are mothers of careers, businesses, movements, or creative works.

   •   Some are mothers of their friendships, their communities, their art.

The Mother also holds the body’s greatest shifts—whether through childbirth, continued menstruation, or changes in physical ability. She may train her body, push through exhaustion, adapt to new cycles and hormonal changes.

“When I was training for a marathon, I was mothering my running. I tended to it for weeks, sacrificed for it, adjusted my diet, endured pain, and showed up every day. And I still ran that race while on my period, knowing that my body was both my greatest challenge and my greatest strength.”

The Mother Within Us All

Even when we leave the years of motherhood, we remain Mothers in different ways.

Each time we pour energy into something, nourish it, fight for it, and commit to it—we are in the Mother phase.

Sacred Reflection:

→ Where am I pouring my energy?

How can I balance giving to others while also giving to myself?

🌘 The Crone: Wisdom, Power & The Sovereign Woman

The Crone is the waning moon, the quiet of autumn and winter, the keeper of secrets and stories. She embodies the element of Water, deep and knowing.

Yet, in today’s world, women are encouraged to fight against becoming the Crone.

We dye our hair, erase our lines, try to stay forever young.

We ignore the sacred transition into deep wisdom, sovereignty, and power.

But the truth is, the Crone is a woman who has done it all.

She has learned, she has given, she has endured, and now she steps into her power fully.

“The first time I found a grey hair, I saw it as magic. My mother never got to be a Crone—she left this world too early. I will not take this transition for granted. My silver hair is my crown, my hard-earned magic, a visible thread of wisdom woven into my story. The world tries to silence the Crone, but I will not be silenced. I will honour her, wear her, and become her.”

The Crone Within Us All

The Crone is not just an old woman—she is the one who knows.

She is in us each time we reflect, when we pause to gather our wisdom, when we guide others with what we’ve learned.

Sacred Reflection:

→ Where am I holding back my wisdom?

How can I honour the Crone within me?

What parts of ageing can I embrace as sacred?

Closing Thoughts

The Maiden, Mother, and Crone exist in all of us.

They are not just life stages, but energies we return to, move through, and embody in different ways throughout our lives.

The greatest gift we can give ourselves is to honour each phase fully—

To embrace our youth, our strength, our wisdom.

To see ourselves as beautiful in every stage of our evolution.
