How the Season Affects Our Energy, Skin & Spirit – Part One
As the light begins to soften and the air takes on that crisp, quiet edge, I feel the turn inward begin. Autumn has always asked something different of us. It doesn’t rush. It doesn’t bloom. It whispers.
This blog is the first in a little series I’m writing to honour this seasonal shift—because the changes we see in the trees, the wind, and the sky aren’t just happening out there. They’re happening within us, too.
This week, I want to talk about some of the more common body and mood changes I notice in myself and in the people who come to see me for massage and ritual. These aren’t just random aches or feelings—they’re signs of the body moving with the season.
Common Changes in the Body During Autumn
1. Tightness & Tension in the Shoulders, Neck & Back
As the cooler air rolls in and we naturally begin to hunch a little more, many of us feel an increase in upper body tension. Energetically, autumn is a time of contraction—it’s no wonder we often carry more in our shoulders.
2. Dry Skin & Sensitivity
Autumn brings dryness, both in the air and in the body. Skin may feel more sensitive, flakier, or prone to irritation. You might even notice your lips or scalp changing too. This is your body calling for nourishment and gentleness.
3. Digestive Shifts & Cravings
We start to move away from the light, raw foods of summer and crave warm, grounding meals. You might feel your digestion slow or notice more bloating. This is a natural part of the season’s invitation to simplify and warm the belly.
4. Energy Dips & Emotional Sensitivity
Just as the leaves fall away, we begin to release too. Many of us feel more emotionally raw or reflective during this time. Energy levels can fluctuate—one day full of drive, the next calling for deep rest.
5. Sleep Patterns May Shift
You might feel like going to bed earlier, or waking in the night more often. The body is recalibrating, adjusting to longer nights and the more inward rhythm of the season.
So What Can We Do With All of This?
The first step is noticing. Tuning in. Letting your body show you what it needs without rushing to fix it.
Over the next few weeks, I’ll be sharing gentle rituals, seasonal oils, and practices you can bring into your life to support this time of year—because autumn isn’t a problem to solve, it’s an invitation to slow down, release, and reconnect.
And if your body is asking for a little extra support right now—whether that’s a warm, grounding massage, a nourishing facial, or just a moment of stillness in a safe space—I’m still here, and The Awen Room is open for you.
Appointments are filling quickly as we head deeper into the season, so this is a lovely time to book ahead and carve out space just for you.
Stay tuned for next week’s post, where I’ll be sharing some of my favourite massage oils and body rituals for autumn.
Blessed be,
Angela 💫
